What does an NDIS support coordinator do?

A support coordinator helps you understand and use your NDIS plan, connect with the right providers, and build your independence over time. Here's what they do and how to get one.

What a support coordinator does

Your support coordinator helps with:

• Understanding your plan — explaining your budgets, what you can claim, and how your funding works
• Connecting with providers — finding and choosing the right services for your needs
• Coordinating your supports — making sure your services work together and don't overlap
• Building your skills — helping you become more confident in managing your own plan over time
• Crisis and problem-solving — stepping in when things go wrong or your needs change
• Preparing for reviews — helping you gather evidence and plan for your next review

Types of support coordination

There are three levels:

1. Support Connection — basic help to find and connect with providers
2. Support Coordination — more comprehensive help to coordinate a range of supports and build your capacity
3. Specialist Support Coordination — for participants with complex needs who require higher-level coordination

How to get a support coordinator

Support coordination is funded under Capacity Building — Choice and Control in your NDIS plan. To get it included:

• At your plan review — ask your planner to include support coordination in your next plan
• If your needs change — request an unscheduled review if you need coordination before your next plan review
• Explain why — describe the challenges you're having managing your plan and providers

How to choose a support coordinator

When choosing a support coordinator, ask:

• What experience do you have with my type of disability?
• How many clients do you work with?
• How quickly do you respond to requests?
• What's your approach to building my independence?
• Are you independent, or do you also provide other services? (An independent coordinator avoids conflicts of interest)

How often will I see my support coordinator?

This depends on your needs and your funding. Some participants meet weekly, others monthly. Your coordinator should agree on a contact schedule that works for you.
