Choosing the Right NDIS Provider: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to find, compare and switch NDIS providers with confidence — what to ask, what to watch for, and how to protect your funding and quality of support.

Why your provider choice matters

Your providers deliver the supports in your plan, so choosing well directly affects your daily experience and your outcomes. The good news: you have choice and control, and you can switch providers at any time.

Step 1: Know what you need

Before searching, be clear on:

  • Which support categories your funding covers
  • What goals you want the provider to help you reach
  • Whether you need a registered provider (some funding requires it)

Step 2: Find providers

Use these sources:

  • The NDIS Provider Finder
  • Recommendations from your LAC or Support Coordinator
  • Local disability networks and community groups

Step 3: Ask the right questions

When you shortlist a provider, ask:

  • What are your hourly rates and any setup fees?
  • How do you handle cancellations and notice periods?
  • What experience do you have with my specific needs?
  • How will we track progress against my goals?
  • What happens if I want to switch providers?

Step 4: Watch for red flags

Be cautious of providers who:

  • Pressure you to sign quickly
  • Are unclear about pricing or charge above the NDIS Price Guide without explanation
  • Don't provide written service agreements
  • Discourage you from seeking a second opinion

Step 5: Switching providers

You can change providers at any time. To switch cleanly:

  1. Check your current service agreement's notice period
  2. Give written notice
  3. Confirm your new provider and transfer any relevant records
  4. Update your plan management if needed

Protecting your funding

Always insist on a written service agreement, and review your statements regularly so you know exactly how your funding is being spent.
